Mountains Archive of Early-modern Japan

This archive contains old Japanese books, maps, and other items from the Kotani Collection, a mountain-related archive owned by the Shinshu University Library.

The Kotani Collection, donated to Shinshu University Library in 2002 by Ryuichi Kotani, an alumnus of the old Matsumoto High School, consists of about 8,000 mountain-related books and journals from various times and places. It is one of Japan's most prominent mountain-related collections.

This archive was created to support research and study by making Japanese old books, maps, and other items in the collection widely accessible via the Internet, and to improve the preservation of the original materials.


■Summary

This archive contains old Japanese books, maps, and other items from the Kotani Collection, a mountain-related archive owned by the Shinshu University Library.

The Kotani Collection, donated to Shinshu University Library in 2002 by Ryuichi Kotani, an alumnus of the old Matsumoto High School, consists of about 8,000 mountain-related books and journals from various times and places. It is one of Japan's most prominent mountain-related collections.

This archive was created to support research and study by making Japanese old books, maps, and other items in the collection widely accessible via the Internet, and to improve the preservation of the original materials.

The image data was created in 2010 by the Committee for the Creation of Shinshu University Library “Mountains Archive of Early-modern Japan” with funding from the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) (Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results <Database>, Grant Number 218039), and is now hosted in the Shinshu University Library Digital Archive, which was built with funding from the Foundation for Library Advancement in 2024.

The previous search and display system for the archive was jointly developed by Kazuki Kobayashi, then an assistant professor, Department of Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Shinshu University, along with the Shinshu University Integrated Intelligence Center and Shinshu University Library with support from the following grants:

■Contents

The archive contains 585 old Japanese books, 68 old maps and other items from early modern times, primarily from the Edo period.
Although the materials may contain errors or expressions that are inappropriate from a modern perspective, they are published as their original form as historical documents from the time of their publication. Please use them with this understanding.

No prior application is required, but please report the details of your reuse at the report form.

■Use of Original Materials

The original materials are held by the Central Library of the Shinshu University Library. In principle, please use the image data instead of the originals to help preserve them.
